Mifepristone

Mifepristone (also known as RU 486) is used to terminate a pregnancy in early stages. It is administered up to the 10th week of pregnancy (up to 70 days after the first day of your last menstrual period).

Mifepristone blocks a natural substance (progesterone) that is needed to maintain your pregnancy. It is usually used together with another medicine called misoprostol.

Mifepristol must not be used if you have a rare abnormal pregnancy outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy). In this case, it will not cause an abortion. It can cause the ectopic pregnancy to rupture and result in very heavy bleeding.
